Integrated Intercom solutions provider, Commend International, are helping to combat the £9million a year illegal trade in mobile phones in prisons, with their HF 100 Mobile Phone Detection Modules.

In addition to integration into Commend’s EF 031 and EB 330 Detention Cell Management solutions, the HF 100 is also available as a stand-alone unit (HF 100EB). Not only does the unit detect mobile phones in use, but unlike other detection devices, the HF 100EB can detect a mobile phone the instant it is switched on, anywhere (within a programmable radius) up to 5m away.

Detecting mobile phones within prisons has become critical to prison governors. Mobile phones smuggled into prisons from the outside and can change hands for up to £400. The number of phones in circulation within UK prisons is believed to be over 20,000 units, which can be used by prisoners to co-ordinate crime and intimidate witnesses on the outside.

Employed within a prison environment, the Commend HF 100 Mobile Phone Detection Modules’ installation and configuration flexibility means that a single unit can be deployed to cover one to three cells. Monitored either by Commend’s master stations, or linked to Commend’s PC-based monitoring software, the advanced system can not only provide prison management with an alert that a phone has been turned on, but also the location of the sensor that detected it. This means guards can identify the precise area a mobile telephone signal is being emitted from - affording swift location of the offending unit via a pinpoint search.

Monitoring via Commend master stations and PC software also affords the programming of routine responses to activated detections. These can range from automated audio warnings, to the automatic opening of cell intercom channels - maximising prison management time and enabling an appropriate response to each incident.

The HF100 is not only sensitive to mobile phones/modems, but is unaffected by other electronic transmissions, such as DECT cordless telephones, or two-way radio traffic, both of which are common in detention environments.
